Setting Out & Level Control

Setting Out & Level Control

Setting Out and Survey Toolkit for Landscape Construction

Setting out is the control mechanism that ensures external works are installed in the correct location, at correct levels, and with gradients that support drainage performance and accessibility. It is one of the highest-leverage disciplines in landscape construction because small errors compound into rework, defects, or compliance failure.

Key setting-out requirements include:

  • Confirm latest drawing revisions and reference datums before works commence
  • Establish protected benchmarks and verify datums are consistent across trades
  • Set out finished levels with build-ups accounted for (sub-base, bedding, finish)
  • Confirm falls, crossfalls, and drainage interfaces before laying or pouring
  • Coordinate thresholds, ramps, steps, and accessible routes with approved intent
  • Verify positioning of chambers, ducts, tree pits, and foundations to prevent clashes

Where projects are phased, setting out also supports controlled handover boundaries and protects completed works from later trade interference.
